FIRST WARN FORECAST: Summer heat wave begins Wednesday

The first taste of true summer heat is headed toward Kansas City, and we kick off our first summer heat wave on Wednesday. The first summer heat wave is set to begin in Kansas City on Wednesday, with temperatures expected to reach the highest of 94 since September, making it the hottest day in over 9 months. The heat and humidity will combine to bring a heat index up to 105 for the afternoon. This will be particularly dangerous for those exposed to the heat, particularly for those with sensitive to it. A First Warn has been issued for Thursday due to dangerous heat and potential severe storms. For Friday, scattered rain may impact outdoor plans. The Heat Risk Index is at the top level due to the excessive heat and time gap since we've been this hot. Father's Day weekend will be largely dry with only 20% rain chances, but temperatures will return with highs in the low to mid 90s.

The first taste of true summer heat is headed toward Kansas City, and we kick off our first summer heat wave on Wednesday. It will be so hot and humid Thursday that we have issued a First Warn due to dangerous heat, plus a few severe storms may pop up. We have another First Warn for Friday as scattered rain may play a role in any plans outdoors.

Starting with Wednesday, the morning is actually rather nice! Morning lows will be in the pleasant mid-60s with sunshine before we propel to the first 90s of the year in Kansas City for the afternoon (we were close last Friday at 89). Humidity will rise a bit, but not terribly so yet.

Thursday is a different story, as the heat and humidity combine to bring a heat index up to 105 for the afternoon. The actual high of 94 will be the hottest since last September, making it the hottest day in over 9 months. We have not felt this kind of heat for awhile and certainly aren’t acclimated to it with the rather mild entry into summer. Because of this, it will feel very uncomfortable for most, and it will be dangerous for some. The Heat Risk Index is at the top level (Extreme), due to the excessive heat and time gap since we’ve been this hot. Those working or enjoying recreations outdoors will want to use caution, as will those sensitive to the heat (young children, the elderly, or anyone who has suffered heat-related illness in the past).

Thursday evening and night could see a few strong to severe storms as well. These won’t be widespread by any means, but rather very patchy. Despite not seeing many of them, those that fire may be strong, with a Level 2/5 risk for severe storms. Hail and damaging winds are the main hazards.

Those storms will be triggered by a cold front that will knock Friday’s temperatures and humidity down a bit with upper 80s. That front may stall over the area and trigger more widespread rain Friday (though still not a washout). There is no current severe risk, but rain and thunderstorms may disrupt outdoor plans. Timing is difficult at this point, but odds currently tilt to a round in the morning... a lull... then a round in the evening. Stay tuned for updates as we zero in on this for you.

Father’s Day weekend is largely dry with just slim 20% rain chances, but the heat comes charging back with highs in the low to mid 90s.
