A downtown KC block is up for sale, and it includes the old detention center
Jackson County announced a bid will be held for the property. Nearly an entire city block in downtown Kansas City is up for sale, including the former Jackson County Detention Center. The property includes buildings between Locust and Cherry streets, as well as 13th and 14th streets. Jackson County Executive Phil LeVota called it a "significant piece of downtown real estate with tremendous potential". The county decided there is no need for the property as the Jackson County detention center is now located at 7000 E. Highway 40. The sale will take place through a bidding process, emphasizing the value of the taxpayer-owned asset and providing an opportunity to return it to productive use. Those interested in the property can submit a bid via email to jacksongov.bonfirehub.com or by November 24, 2026.
