In Kansas AG’s race, Kobach is pressed for names of 188 priests accused of abuse
Democratic challenger Chris Mann is among those calling for the release of the names of suspected child sex abusers identified in a KBI investigation. In the Kansas attorney general race, Kris Kobach is being pressured for the names of 188 priests accused of abuse. The campaign's 30-second ad alleges that Kobach has a list of suspected predators and covers up for them. The issue of clergy abuse has become a major issue in the race, with victim advocates and Kobach opponents accusing him of protecting predators in his handling of a multi-year investigation involving Kansas' Catholic dioceses. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) opened an investigation into reports of sexual abuse in the four Roman Catholic dioceseeses in Kansas in February 2019 and identified 400 victims. The crimes included aggravated criminal sodomy, rape, aggravated indecent liberties with a child and aggravated sexual battery. The Attorney General’s Office referred 30 cases involving 14 priests to prosecutors, but no criminal charges were filed because in most cases the statute of limitations on the crimes had expired. Democratic challenger Chris Mann is among those calling for the release of the suspected abusers identified in the investigation.
