Kansas City True Crime Ghost Tour Revisits Unsolved Murders

Downtown Kansas City's ghost tour isn't just spooky stories — some of these murders are still unsolved. The True Crime and Ghost Tour in downtown Kansas City, a two-mile walk through downtown Kansas city featuring unsolved murders, has become a Halloween-season sensation due to high demand for tickets for the event. The tour, run by Sherrie Ortiz, owner of Just One Day Travel Tours, covers a nearly two-marchion route that includes a walk through hotel rooms and office towers where real killings occurred alongside ghost stories. Stops include the Muehlebach Hotel, Hotel Phillips, and Power & Light Building, where attorney Richard Armitage was beaten to death in 2000. The most haunting stop is the Hotel President, where 19-year-old Artemus Ogletree checked into Room 1046 under the alias Roland T. Owen on January 2, 1935, and was found fatally wounded two days later, but no one has ever been charged. The case remains open nine decades later. The company's guide, Kimberly Beer, believes the tour can teach visitors Kansas City history even if they are skeptical of the paranormal elements woven throughout, but also acknowledges the connection to her own family's past and the city itself. The tours are part of a larger trend of true crime walking tours, with Grand View Research valuing the dark-tourism market at $32 billion nationally and projecting growth to $39 billion by 2030.
