Who qualifies for Medicare’s new $50-a-month GLP-1 program?
The new Medicare GLP-1 program could save beneficiaries thousands, but many won’t qualify. The new Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program offers eligible participants access to certain weight-loss drugs for a $50 monthly copayment through Dec. 31, 2027. Participants must be enrolled in a qualifying Medicare Part D prescription drug plan and some special Medicare coverage arrangements are excluded from the program. Those with Type 2 diabetes, moderate to severe sleep apnea or fatty liver disease may not qualify for the Bridge program, as Medicare may already cover GLP/1 drugs for those conditions through standard Part D benefits. Eligible adults must have a BMI of at least 35, or a lower BMI combined with conditions such as uncontrolled high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, prediabetes, a prior heart attack, stroke or peripheral artery disease. The program remains in effect through 2027, regardless of income.
