Kansas City grocery chain launches discount store as customers demand value

The former Price Chopper at Blue Ridge Cutoff near Raytown has opened a no-frills grocery store. The company claims it's offering quality products at lower prices by cutting advertising and other expenses. A Kansas City grocery chain, Cosentino's Food Stores, is launching a discount store called ChopMore! By Price Chopper in Brywood Center, which aims to provide customers with price transparency and deep savings. The store is a vertical within Cosentinos's Food Store, which has operated in the metro for over 75 years. The concept involves a cost-plus approach where product is priced at cost, plus 10 percent added at checkout to cover overhead, reducing expenses in other areas. The former Price Choppers store in the space, which had about 100 employees a year ago, now has about 60. The company did not lay off workers but gradually downsized through attrition. The first 100 customers will receive a $20 ChopMore!, gift card. The retailer-owned wholesale grocery cooperative, Associated Wholesale Grocers, includes Cosentini's and Price Chopping brands.
