Penguin Park Renovation Begins in Kansas City North

Penguin Park isn't closing — but it is getting a four-phase facelift. Here's what's changing. Penguin Park in Kansas City North, a landmark playground known for its animal-themed play areas and penguin displays, has begun a four-phase renovation project in Kansas city. The project is being led by Kansas City Parks and Recreation, with the first phase focusing on the Penguin Blue area, where demolition and removal of existing surfacing will take three to four business days, followed by installation of new 50/50 black-and-green poured-in-place surfacing over another three to eight business days. Phase three will focus on the Elephant Gray area, with a shorter two-to-three-day demolition window and two to three days of new surfacing installation, adding up to an estimated four to six business days total. The final phase will include new playground equipment and surfacing, with equipment for this phase set to be delivered by January 25, 2027. The new equipment and surfingacing are expected to last another 15 to 20 years and the latest work is expected to be done before summer. The park's signature animals, including the giraffe, kangaroo, elephant, and giant penguin, are expected unchanged.
