Kansas City Mayor Lucas walks Independence Avenue as residents make their case for investment
More than a dozen Historic Northeast neighbors and community members took Mayor Quinton Lucas on a walk along the length of Independence Avenue to highlight the area’s best qualities — and point out the problems in need of city solutions. Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas held a four-mile walk through Independence Avenue, which residents highlighted for the first time as a pedestrian. The walk highlighted a lack of public trash bins along the area's main thoroughfare, which led to concerns about crime and nuisance activity. Lucas also highlighted the quality of infrastructure and suggested that a model of neighborhood policing could address these issues. Residents also highlighted vacant buildings, vacant markets, and empty parking lot. The mayor suggested that an immediate solution to these issues is widening the path for pedestrians and calling for more investment.
