Johnson County business of 66 years is closing. A dying, yet ‘human’ industry
As a business as old as Overland Park itself closes, a cobbler tells his story. Overland Park Shoe Repair, a business that has been operating for 66 years, is set to close its doors at the end of the year. Henry Barbosa, who has worked at the shop since 1986 and is its fourth and final owner, has been working at the store since 1960. The doors will close on Dec. 31 and shoe dropoffs will end on Halloween. The industry is rapidly declining, with estimates suggesting that 97% of shoe repair businesses over the past century are in decline. Barbosa credits his customers for keeping him in business and maintaining a personal touch with customers.
