Cold weather increases risk of respiratory illness in eastern Idaho
Eastern Idaho Public Health reports an increase in influenza-like illnesses as residents approach the regional peak in early January. While cold weather indirectly facilitates viral spread by drying nasal passages and increasing indoor contact, officials emphasize prevention through vaccination and hygiene. The agency is currently offering free vaccinations for COVID-19, the flu, and RSV across nine local offices to protect both individuals and the community. Cold weather in eastern Idaho can increase the risk of respiratory illness, according to Esmy Quintero, the clinical services manager for Eastern Idaho Public Health. The Mayo Clinic states that while you cannot catch a cold, the flu, or other illnesses without a virus present, poor ventilation inside allows germs to pass from person to person. The cold, dry air dries out your nasal passages and mucus membranes, making it easier to catch these illnesses and get sick. Eastern Idaho public health encourages people to stay home when they're sick, disinfect frequently touched surfaces, and get vaccinated for flu, Covid, RSV, and other illnesses. The flu vaccine is recommended every year due to there being various strains of the influenza virus circulating.
