KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In honor of World Autism Awareness Day, McDonald’s restaurants in the Kansas City metro are holding a digital fundraiser on Tuesday.

All digital sales from apps and in-store kiosks will donate 10% to Autism Speaks – an organization that aims to support, promote solutions and advocate for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families for the entirety of their lives.

The National Institute of Mental Health defines autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as “a neurological and developmental disorder that affects how people interact with others, communicate, learn, and behave.”

About 1 in 36 children have ASD, and the diagnoses are approximately four times greater for boys than girls, according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network.

Support for the ASD community extends far beyond a single day or month of the year, with April also representing World Autism Awareness Month. Donating is possible year-round.

The Autism Speaks website include many other opportunities to donate, fundraise and volunteer on behalf of ASD.

If interested, several other organizations provide similar opportunities to get involved, including: The National Autistic Society, the American Autism Association and the Organization for Autism Research.
