KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A Kansas City-area woman has been inducted into the Marquis Who’s Who Biographical Registry after overcoming a traumatic brain injury and switching careers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Marquis Who’s Who Ventures announced on Sunday, March 24, that Andy Garcia, of Kansas City, is set to be inducted into the Marquis Who’s Who Biographical Registry. Individuals are profiled and chosen based on their current reference value.

Officials noted that factors like position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility and prominence in a field are taken into account during the selection process. Garcia is an Audiobook Narrator who entered the industry in 2020 after she worked as a therapist, educator and public speaker.

According to the Who’s Who, Garcia transitioned into her new role after she sustained a traumatic brain injury when she was hit during a traffic collision. This led to a long road to recovery which even forced her to re-learn how to walk and talk again. Forced to retire from mental health care, she found passion and purpose in narrating audiobooks.

The career change allowed Garcia to engage in a profession that was directly related to her ongoing recovery.

The Who’s Who indicated that Garcia records audiobooks for publishers like Simon & Schuster, Penguin Random House, Audible, Spotify and more, however, she also narrates for indie authors. She even narrates live on TikTok, YouTube and other social media platforms to give listeners a behind-the-scenes look.

During her career as a licensed therapist, the biography noted that Garcia held various roles such as director of behavioral health, director of a psychiatric hospital, clinical outpatient behavioral health organizer and more. During this time, she also worked as a graduate-level adjunct professor at Avila University and the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Garcia also runs a successful coaching business, BRAND New You, to help fellow narrators in social media content creation, marketing and branding. She hopes to expand her mentorship to more individuals with disabilities.

The Who’s Who noted that Garcia’s educational accolades match her professional ones with diplomas for Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, Master of Liberal Arts in Social Science and Master of Arts in Counseling. She held various credentials and licenses as well.

Garcia is also a dedicated member of the community donating her free time to serve through a variety of events. She spent the past four years working with industry-renowned coaches to perfect her craft. Her hard work won her the Silver Award from the HEAR Now Festival in 2023. She continues to strive for excellence.

“I’ve been honored to be selected,” Garcia told KCTV5 News.
