Project searches for families of boys buried at Missouri reform school generations ago
The effort in the Show-Me State is part of The Forgotten Children Initiative, which aims to identify and recover the stories of children who died in youth institutions across the nation. The Forgotten Children Initiative, based at Georgetown University’s Center for Youth Justice, is searching for the families of boys who died decades ago at a former youth correctional facility in central Missouri. Volunteers are working to identify any living family members and the untold stories of these children who died between 1909 and 1945. The project is part of a larger effort to recover stories that were left untold after these deaths. The initiative has identified burial sites and cemeteries tied to 40 youth correctional institutions in 29 states and has identified over 1,000 children so far. The next step is to find any living relatives of children who were buried there.
