Does Mother Nature impact our win/loss record Opening Day at the K? A look back.....

It’s opening day and while some say the warmer weather favors our boys in blue, the stats say something a bit differently! The Kansas City Royals team's win/loss record on Opening Day at the Kansas City stadium has been compared to the past five years. Over the years, the team has seen a trend of winning games when the first pitch is at 67 degrees and losing, while in 2023, 47 degrees, and 50 degrees in 2021, both wins. However, in 2020, temperatures in the mid-70s were warmer than the opening day due to a pandemic pandemic, leading to a loss. The team seems to perform better with mild temperatures, in the upper 40s to mid-50s, and in 2019, they started the game at 55 degrees and won.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - It’s opening day and while some say the warmer weather favors our boys in blue, the stats say something a bit differently!

Our First Warn 5 Weather Team did some digging over the past 5 years - so let’s look back!

In 2023, at the first pitch on opening day, we hit 67 degrees and lost.

In 2022, 47 degrees. In 2021, 50 degrees. Both wins!

And 2020 - well - it does stick out like a sore thumb with a temp in the upper 70s. This opening day was at the end of July because of the pandemic and unfortunately, we walked away with the L.

Then in 2019 we started the game at 55 degrees and won!

It seems like the boys do better with mild temperatures - in the upper 40s to mid-50s.

Temperatures for the first pitch will be at 65 degrees so let’s break this streak, wear our good luck charms this afternoon, and bring home the WIN!
