KC residents share concerns on Independence Avenue walk with Mayor Lucas
KC residents talk crime, homelessness on Independence Avenue walk with Mayor Lucas. Mayor Quinton Lucas of Kansas City walked Independence Avenue block by block for two hours, spending two hours talking with residents and business owners. The walk was part of a larger effort to address issues such as crime, houselessness, and homelessness in the area. Lucas has previously walked other corridors, including Troost Avenue and Red Bridge Road, leading to tighter rules for used car lots, new ordinances targeting vacant lots and a push to bring a grocery store back to an empty shopping center. Carlos Ruiz Finch, executive chef and owner of Tiki Taco, joined the walk and expressed his desire to give back to the neighborhood where he was raised. He highlighted vacant storefronts along the avenue as a missed opportunity for new businesses and decreased homelessness in area.
