Driver seriously injured after medical emergency causes 4-vehicle crash

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that a Honda Odyssey driven by Megan N. Champlin, a Chevrolet Silverado driven by Lucas L. Brin, and a 2015 Ram 1500 driven by David L. Yochim were all stopped at a red stoplight. Jack C. O’Neal, a 75-year-old driver from Leavenworth, experienced a medical emergency and failed to stop before he hit the back of Champlin's van, causing it to hit Brin's pickup which hit YochIM's. O'Neal was taken to Providence Medical Center with suspected serious injuries. Meanwhile, Champlin was treated at St. John's Medical Center for minor injuries.

LANSING, Kan. (KCTV) - One driver was seriously injured after a medical emergency caused a 4-vehicle collision on a highway in Lansing, Kan.

The Kansas Highway Patrol Crash Log indicates that around 9 a.m. on Wednesday, June 12, emergency crews were called to the area of southbound Highway 73 and Mary St., by the Abundant Hearts Preschool and Daycare, with reports of a 4-vehicle collision.

When first responders arrived, they said they found a 2016 Honda Odyssey driven by Megan N. Champlin, 39, of Kansas City, Kan., a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Lucas L. Brin, 35 of Leavenworth, and a 2015 Ram 1500 driven by David L. Yochim, 60, of Leavenworth, had all been stopped at a red stoplight.

Meanwhile, KHP said a 2011 GMC Sierra driven by Jack C. O’Neal, 75, of Leavenworth, experienced a medical emergency and failed to stop before he hit the back of Champlin’s van. This caused the van to hit the back of Brin’s pickup which hit the back of Yochim’s.

First responders said O’Neal was taken to Providence Medical Center with suspected serious injuries. He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Meanwhile, Champlin was taken to St. John’s Medical Center with suspected minor injuries. She was wearing her seatbelt at the time. Brin and Yochim escaped the crash without injury.
